Equine Influenza Confirmed in Carroll County. Dec 19, 2024

The Equine Diseases Communication Center published an alert earlier this morning (December 19) about a confirmed case of Equine Influenza at a barn in Woodbine (Carroll County). Equine Influenza is a highly contagious though rarely fatal respiratory disease and does not require mandatory quarantine of the facility by MDA.

According to EDCC, three horses at the boarding facility have tested positive. The initial horse to show symptoms was a three-year-old Quarter Horse filly that began showing signs on December 7. The filly had recently been shipped to Woodbine from Oklahoma and is now located in St. Thomas, PA. The other two horses that have tested positive are a one-year-old gelding and a two-year-old colt. All three horses are listed as Reining horses according to EDCC.
